This time last week, three of the Editing Globally team had just left\u00a0the\u00a0annual conference of the\u00a0Society for Editors and Proofreaders<\/b><\/a>\u00a0(SfEP), this time\u00a0in St\u00a0Neots, England.\u00a0Katherine Trail<\/strong><\/a>, Kelly Lamb<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/b>and I (Janet MacMillan<\/b><\/a>)\u00a0wended our way\u00a0there\u00a0\u2013 some of us travelling a very long way and one of us spending as long on three trains as the other two did on planes\u00a0\u2013 to learn (and teach) why context is key.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our editing careers differ in length and subject fields and genres. It was Katherine\u2019s third SfEP conference, and Kelly and Janet\u2019s first (although Kelly and Janet have both been to other editing conferences). But we were all unanimous in our verdict: it was\u00a0superb!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone was so friendly and open, it was so inclusive, everyone was clearly there to share their skills and learn new ones, or even just confirm they were on the right track, and, oh my, was the food ever good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We three arrived early evening before the conference officially started the next afternoon. What a great decision!\u00a0We enjoyed a casual evening in the venue pub with a dozen or so other attendees, which we all found a delightful way to settle in and talk to people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The next morning, the three of us headed off for some pampering in the venue complex\u2019s spa, which, given the\u00a0intensity of the following 48+ hours, was a wise move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the\u00a0annual general meeting, which was so non-contentious that it was over in no time,\u00a0there was\u00a0an impromptu and very noisy tea party, though perhaps the noise level was related to the number of folks who packed into one rather small room. Even with the door and windows open one could tell it\u00a0was a happy gathering.\u00a0Kelly\u00a0immortalized\u00a0it for posterity.<\/p>\n

The dinner and pub-type quiz that\u00a0evening\u00a0were\u00a0great fun. I\u2019ll spare the blushes of the team I was on and not identify them. One might say that we weren\u2019t exactly stars! Mind you,\u00a0we did a bit better on the acronym and abbreviations round than the other rounds. I think that\u00a0the\u00a0preponderance of academic editors at the table is the explanation.\u00a0Even though\u00a0I don\u2019t think any of the\u00a0Editing Globally<\/b><\/a>\u00a0team closed the bar that night, we certainly enjoyed some great conviviality before retiring to our respective beds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
